An amazing journey from the first night in Osaka to the last night in Tokyo, this is some of the band's finest and most intense playing ever caught on tape.

    But it's OK to spin this CD for this review as this album can be considered as masterpiece of classic rock live album. "Highway Star" () is well suited as album opener. On Made in Japan, Deep Purple managed to do both making it one of the greatest live albums ever. On these Japanese dates the band was on fire playing the definitive /5(67).

    The most famous live version is featured on the live album Made in Japan. The Guardian said, "Blackmore’s playing is like a force of nature on the Made in Japan version; those slashing chords in the intro, and that amazing solo featuring the distinctive neo-classical descending runs, combining the spirits of Bach and Jimi Hendrix.".

    In , a deluxe edition was announced with further bonus material. The album had a strong critical reception and continues to attract praise. A Rolling Stone readers' poll in ranked Made in Japan the sixth best live album of all time.
